About Summer Reading

Like all public libraries in Oregon, Oregon City Public Library receives a Ready to Read grant from the State Library of Oregon to provide summer reading activities for all children. Additional funding comes from local businesses, nonprofits, and the library's youth program budget.

Children who sign up for the program receive a free book to take home and keep. Youth can earn additional prizes for reading at home during the summer. The library also offers a variety of free, fun, and educational activities for children and families during the summer months.

Children who read regularly during the summer months are more likely to maintain their reading skills while not in school, and do not have to spend the first weeks of the new school year recovering from the skills regression known as the "summer slide."
