The 2016 Memorial Day event brought around 400 people to Mt. View Cemetery for the annual commemorative service! The beautiful weather brightened an otherwise solemn service.
Tributes were placed at the base of the flag in the Veteran's Memorial area with the help of representatives from the various conflicts, organizations, JROTC, and our local fire and police departments. The Clackamas Fire District Number 1 honored George Mead, a fellow fireman who died in the line of duty in 1956 with a procession to his grave site. The tributes were followed by the VFW Post Number 1324's 21-gun salute and Taps.
The invocation, a very meaningful keynote speech, and benediction were given by Retired Naval Commander J.J. Morell. Presentation of Colors was done by Oregon City High School JROTC, followed by the National Anthem. Additional music throughout the service was performed by Gardiner Middle School and Grand View Baptist Church Bands; Olivia Thoroughman, bagpiper and bugler with the 234th Army Band played Taps.
The service was concluded and refreshments enjoyed by the community.
A special thank you goes to David Bone for his continued support in leading the service and to the Boy Scout Troop Number 220 for help in placing flags in preparation for the service, passing out programs and cleanup following the service. The Grand View Baptist Church also gets our thanks for assisting in placing the flags on the Veteran's graves.
